The End of an Era
After the finish of the 2003 Championships the Post Office closed.
In 2004 only stamps could be purchased in newsagents but the Post Office did leave a pillar box.
The Society of Olympic Collectors sponsored this postmark to commemorate the 2004 Athens Olympics and the Olympic torch being relayed around Britain via Wimbledon where it was carried by Tim Henman. It also marked the first year that the Games were held in London in 1908.
The postmark was limited to one date only, Saturday, 26th June 2004
To obtain the 2005 commemorative postmark it was necessary to send a stamped addressed cover to LSHC, Mount Pleasant.
Sunday, 3rd July was the last day of the 2005 Championships and the very last day that the LSHC used a changeable date stamp for the commemorative postmark.
Andy Murray Wimbledon Champion 2013
On the8th May 2013 Royal Mail issued set of four stamps commemorating Andy Murray winning the Gent’s Championship. Royal Mail offered a plain first day postmark. To ease the work load it was requested that stamped addressed covers be sent in at local post offices for forwarding to the nearest Special Handstamp Centre. All the plain postmarks read exactly the same.
Royal Mail sold illustrated first day covers from its Special Handstamp Centres in Edinburgh, Birmingham, London, Cardiff and South Shields with the addressee’s address printed on the cover. All the postmarks read exactly the same.
Royal Mail Birmingham Mail Centre sponsored this first day postmark marking the first British Men’s Singles Champion for 77 years. The postmark was applied at the Royal Mail Midland Handstamp Centre in Birmingham.
