A non-registered letter postmarked in the main office 12.45.PM Saturday, 1st July 1961. That year the handstamp without a stop after the post code S.W.19 was used in the main office.

Application for the commemorative handstamp made at the post office at the Ground on non-registered mail were generally sent to the main office for postmarking but this could not be done on Saturdays because the main office closed on Saturday afternoons. The only postmarks stamped in the main office on Saturdays were on items directly received by mail and all were stamped 12.45.PM before the office closed for the afternoon.

1965 Saturday in both the Main and Mobile Offices

It would appear that these two stamped, self-addressed envelopes were sent to the main office requesting that they be returned handstamped with the commemorative postmark. That prepared and stamped for registration should have been forwarded to the mobile office which dealt with registration and the other should have been dealt with in the main office where a time was always shown in the handstamp but inadvertently they were switched. This resulted in the non-registered letter being sent to the mobile office and handstamped without a time being shown and the other being handstamped in the main office with the time shown.

Most, but not all cancellations on registered letters left blank the space to show a time.

A registered letter postmarked on the last day of The Championships, Saturday, 4th July 1964. In 1964 the handstamp with the stop after the post code S.W.19. was used in the mobile office.

All mail, both registered and non-registered, posted in the mobile office was postmarked there showing a time, apart from a few registered letters, because the main office did not stay open Saturday afternoons and there was no time to send it to there to be dealt with, especially when it was the last day of The Championships.

Normally, non-registered mail was sent to the main office for postmarking but as it was closed on Saturdays afternoons it had to be dealt with in the mobile office. In the main office a time was always shown in the handstamp so a time was added to be handstamp used in the mobile office which normally did not show a time when postmarking registered mail.

On weekdays ordinary non-registered mail was taken to the main office for postmarking but as the main office closed on Saturday afternoons it was postmarked in the mobile office. The ordinary mail was handstamped in batches and, as was done in the main office where a time was always shown, a time was generally included in the handstamp.

1958-1971 Weekday Evenings

Unregistered mail posted at the mobile office was normally taken to the main office to be handstamped but if it was received too late to be included in the day’s collection for the main office, that left about 4 pm, it was handstamped in the mobile office. As it was not practical to keep changing the time in the handstamp when a receipt was required, the time was usually omitted. However, the ordinary mail posted after the last collection for the main office had gone, was handstamped in the mobile office which resulted in ordinary mail being postmarked with the time in the handstamped being left blank.

An ordinary non-registered letter posted Thursday, 2nd July 1964 in the mobile office. In 1964 the handstamp with the stop was used in the mobile office. No time is shown.

An ordinary non-registered letter posted Wednesday, 3rd July 1963. That year the handstamp without stop was used in the mobile office. No time is shown.

The mobile circular handstamp was for use on registered items. It is unusual to find it used to cancel stamps on ordinary mail.

An ordinary non-registered letter posted at the Ground and postmarked Monday, 20th June 1966. In 1966 the handstamp with the larger gap between the words ALL ENGLAND was used in the mobile office.

This is a rare example of an ordinary, unregistered letter being postmarked with both the promotional handstamp and the mobile date stamp. It would have been postmarked in the mobile office because it had missed the last day’s collection for the main office and the space for the time left blank, as was the normal practice up to 1966.
